NE198 “Contextualization of production data in the process industry” has been newly published

from 2024-08-12

The NAMUR recommendation NE198 from WG 2.4 Manufacturing Operations Management has been newly published and can now be obtained from the office.

Abstract to NE 198 "Contextualization of production data in the process industry"

Industrial experience with the implementation of digitalization strategies in production control and analysis has shown that the management of production-related information comes with significant challenges. It is not the lack of suitable interfaces or pools of data that proves to be the greatest obstacle to the targeted analysis and use of production data; rather, it is the lack of knowledge about their semantics and the relevant contexts at the time the data was generated. At the same time, analytical processes that consider contextual information are becoming increasingly valuable as they deliver more conclusive results. Recognizing these weaknesses has prompted the motivation for developing a systematic approach to context management in order to improve and simplify the analysis and evaluation of production data. Context management is defined as the timely creation, provision and use of structured information on the correlations of production-related data.

The NAMUR recommendation NE198 is aimed at:

  • addressing the benefit of and need for the contextualization of production data;
  • identifying and classifying context categories that are important in operational processes and for the analysis of process data;
  • outlining potential forms of implementation in technical systems;
  • formulating requirements for the implementation of data contextualization in technical systems;
  • illustrating the connection to the concepts of NAMUR Open Architecture.

Requirements for setting up an operational context management system are outlined based on practical experience and expectations for the future.
